You’ll either love it or hate it. The Google Glass is an omniscient figure for anyone who regularly reads dystopian or science fiction. But it seems harmless enough to most people – doesn’t it?
This device is a piece of glass shaped into a prism which is able to project images on top of your existing vision. It’s operated by voice commands, a touchscreen, and head movements. It is attached to a headset not unlike a glasses frame with only a square glass positioned in front of one eye. It may look strange now, but Google has plans to add sunglass and prescription lenses into the mix.
Google Glass Technical Specifications.
Google has a longstanding relationship with Android. So it is no surprise that Google Glass is designed to support Android versions 4.0.4 and higher. It also features a display of 640 x 360 pixels and a 5-megapixel camera. The camera feature is capable of taking 720p video. Google Glass is both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capable and sports a whopping 16 gigabytes of storage, though only 12 gigabytes of storage space is free to use by consumers. It has a 682MB RAM processor and has a 3 axis gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer. Google Glass features a bone conduction transducer, as well. Don’t worry, though. This only means that it is able to transfer sound to the inner ear by passing sound through the bones of the skull.
The camera. Google Glass has a built-in voice-activated camera which can take both pictures and videos.
The touchscreen. Google Glass has a touchscreen on one side which allows the wearer to manually operate the glasses. It allows the user to scroll or swipe through the menu options without having to use his or her voice.
The Glass. The actual Glass is by far the most impressive feature of Google Glass. This is a prism which is positioned in front of your eye which is able to project information into your field of vision. This can be anything from directions to previously taken photographs.
Glassware. This is just a fancy name for the applications which have been specifically designed for Google Glass. These, like the device itself, are being created by third-party developers who are not affiliated with Google. However, many much-loved and already existing Google applications, such as Google+, Google Maps, and Gmail have been made available to Google Glass users. One attractive feature of the Google Glassapplications is that they are required to be free of both charge and advertisements. Facial recognition apps that are currently on the market may make it so that you will never have to experience the awkwardness of forgetting someone’s name again!
Voice commands. This is one of the other big functions of the Google Glass. While the device does feature a touchpad on one side which allows the user to scroll through menu options, it is easier and more efficient for the user to make use of the voice commands. Users can activate their headpiece by saying the phrase “OK, Glass” and then speaking their command. Some common commands are “Record a video,” “Take a picture,” “Give me directions to…,” and “Google….” If you think the phrase “O.K. Glass” is a little silly, you can also activate your headpiece and therefore readying it for a command by simply tilting your head upward.
Phone app. If you have a smartphone, you can further control your Google Glass by downloading the MyGlass phone app. While this kind of defeats the purpose of the hands-free Glass, it can be a great tool for those users who need some time to get used to it. Presumably, this application is able to help you access anything you would ordinarily be able to access using the voice commands or the small side touchscreen.
The entire purpose of the Google Glass is to augment your reality. In other words, it is designed to make your life easier and better and to free you to become better at what you do best. It can project images into your field of vision which can help you navigate your way through an area previously unknown to you. How many times have you wished you were able to quickly access a camera or a video camera? Google Glass is always there and ready to go.
Strictly speaking this is not really an item of virtual reality hardware – though it is linked. The history of virtual reality is full of hardware items such as the Nintendo Virtual Boy which plays virtual reality games. These have helped to shape what we have today such as the Omni Virtuix, Xbox One, Sony PS4, and of course now Google Glass.
Imagine this. You are walking along the street and witness a crime. The perpetrator climbs into a car before anyone can stop him and begins to drive away. In a normal situation, you would desperately try to memorize the license plate number so that you could report it to the police, but this isn’t always easy or accurate. In a situation in which your reality is augmented, you could instead say “OK Glass, take a picture!” and the license plate number would be there for you when you need it.
