With the launch of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ Samsung dropped a slick smartphone bomb on the industry, but Gear VR owners who had a previous Galaxy phone were out of luck, since the new phone doesn’t use Micro-USB anymore.
So with a new phone Samsung have updated their Gear VR model to work with it. The styling of the Gear has also been updated to be a bit slicker (and blacker) look. This new Gear VR is still an Oculus product, the optics and comfort should be at least as good as previous Gears. Which were very good in that department, it should be said.
While this is the only Gear VR that will work with the S8 phones, thanks to a changeable connector, this Gear VR is backwards compatible with all the most recent Gear models.
One significant addition to this version of the Gear VR is the included wireless control. That opens up a whole host of applications from the Oculus app store without having to put down any additional money.
So in short, if you own a Galaxy S8 you need this for VR. If you own an older phone, you can upgrade to this and get an S8 later. If you don’t plan to get an S8, there’s little point in getting this instead of an older Gear that may now be cheaper.
